Clipper Three Brothers

MA-302 Clipper Three Brothers - 1875
"The largest sailing ship in the world" at 328 ft. and 2972 tons. During the middle of the 19th Century clippers were famous for their speed. With their tall masts and massive amount of sail, they made record times on world wide trade trade routes crossing the Atlantic and the Pacific and around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. Artwork for this 130 ft. ocean going yacht is a collaboration of Parsons and Atwater. Published by Currier & Ives in 1869. Folk art published by Currier & Ives in 1893 and probably drawn by staff artists. Protected cruisers were the battleships of the 1890's and the pride of the U.S. Navy. They were "protected" by heavy armor up to 4" thick and heralded a new age of American world power. Print sizes:36" x 48", 30" x 40", 18" x 24", 12" x 16".

Another Charles Parsons illustration published by Currier & Ives in 1883. Parsons loved to exaggerate the waves, making the steamer look more stately as she apparently slid smoothly through the turmoil with no sign of pitching or rocking. Published by Currier & Ives in 1878, another magnificent Charles Parsons illustration. Two steamers pass each other on the Hudson, one headed to Albany, and one to New York. Artist J.O. Davidson painted this dramatic scene of the start of the 1886 race between Mayflower of the Eastern Yacht Club (U.S.) and challenger Galatea of Britain's Royal Northern Yacht Club. Vigilant and Valkerie - 1893 America

Artist L. F. Hurd employed a more impressionistic style in painting this 1893 America's Cup race. Vigilant, the victor, was designed by Nathaniel Herreshoff and built in Bristol, Rhode Island.
