Eyes for the Navy
Naval ships need Your binoculars! Send them to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy. The U.S. Navy could build ships but not make binoculars. Bausch and Lomb is an American company started by two German immigrants in the 1850's. They started with monocles and eyeglasses, but by the turn of the Century they had expanded into camera lenses, microscopes, and binoculars. They got the optical glass from Germany and partnered with Zeiss, a German company. When the U.S. went to war with Germany, the government was hard pressed to procure the binoculars and other lenses they needed for Naval operations. So citizens who owned a good pair of binoculars were asked to help. How do you illustrate the urgency of the situation in a poster? Artist Gordon Grant blindfolded the officer standing watch.
