About Our Pricing

We have taken many hours to find and select posters that are wonderful works of art as well as moments in American history. We have spent hours on each image to restore it to what we believe the original artist wanted with subtle or vivid color. However, it is important to emphasize that it is not our art. What we offer our customer is craftsmanship in printing. We are selling prints, not art. Prints of some of these same works can be purchased elsewhere. Our objective is to provide our customer with the best quality print we can produce at the lowest price we can and still make a living.

Why the price includes shipping (within the first 48 U.S. states.)

It stems from a basic philosophy that the way to do business is to treat customers the way I would want to be treated. If I see something advertised at one price, I don't want to find out later that I am paying a different and higher price. By including shipping we can assure you that if the price says $12.95, that is the amount that will be charged to your credit card, not $18.50 because shipping is added on. And it will be at your doorstep. Including the shipping also makes the shopping cart and your shopping experience much simpler. So in other words, $12.95 for the poster is really about $8.20 for the poster and $4.75 for the nice box and the shipping expense.

All items are priced the same because pricing is based on cost of printing and shipping, not on how well known the artist is or how much we think the actual art is worth.

Framed vs. Unframed

Pricing does not include the frame… unless otherwise specified.
We can frame your poster in a couple of different ways (with or without a matte). We use the high-end Nielsen frames as our standard. For economy, we offer prints unframed. You get the print at much lower cost, and you can frame it or have it framed any way you like. We checked out inexpensive frames at both Walmart and Michaels to confirm that it will not be difficult for you to find an inexpensive frame you can easily place your poster in. You may want to take it to a framing shop near you for a more professional look.

Proportion or Aspect Ratio

There are three popular rectangular shapes or ratios. When a poster has a certain ratio, and we make it larger, it retains the ratio. The chart below is provided to show the possible sizes. A poster that is 8 x 12, for example enlarges to 20 x 30, not 24 x 30. Most of the World War I original posters were printed in a 2:3 ratio. They are offered here in compatible sizes with 12 x 18 as the most common and economical. Some were in a 3:4 ratio. For the 12 inch wide size, we show those printed on 12 x 18 paper with extra white margin at the top and bottom You can always trim them and frame them in a 12 x 16 frame. We found that both 12 x 18 and 12 x 16 frames are readily available. If you hang several together, you may want to keep all the frames at an 18 inch height. The Sizes shown in bold are the most popular, which means you are more likely to find a standard frame in those sizes. A protocol often not followed is to state the horizontal dimension first. In other words a vertical or "portrait" format would be 12 x 18, while a horizontal or "landscape" format would be 18 x 12. If you want a size we don't show on this site, send us an email.

This web site has two sections: The first section is the collection of 32 World War I posters that we chose as our favorites. For the first year or so, these were the only posters we offered. Each of the 32 has its own purchase page. Now we have added many more wonderful posters in different categories that you can access from our "Collections" page. These posters are described in less detail. Each is available in several different sizes. To purchase a poster from our Collections, please go to the "Purchase" Page, where the process is a little different. We ask you to complete an order form or send an email explaining what you want. Then we send an order acknowledgement to your email with an order number. We don't want you to make a payment until after you see and approve the order acknowledgement. This way you will know exactly what the cost will be and what you will get. Also approximately when you will get it. Typically, a customer is dissatisfied when he or she gets less than or pays more than expected, and this is what we strive to avoid.

About Our Prints
Each of our WWI posters and most of the other posters on this site is printed from a digital file that reproduces a poster printed a hundred or more years ago. In many cases, the original old poster was an imperfect lithographic print, in which the multiple colors were not always in perfect register. Color printing as recently as 1990 was not what it is today, and certainly in 1918 was nothing like the color printing possible today. Most of the old posters had yellowed and darkened over time, and many had scratches, tears and fold lines. Some of our friends have suggested maintaining the yellowed, beaten up look for authenticity, but we have chosen to do our best to make our prints look like new with no signs of wear and tear.

Larger prints, such as 20 x 30 or 24 x 36 in some cases may not appear to have the same sharpness or detail when you look close . However, they will look great on a wall, and people do not generally look close at a large print. They view from a distance of two or three feet or more. In any event your satisfaction is guaranteed.

About Glorifying War
When the United States went to war in 1917 and again in 1941, the entire country was called upon to do its share. War is always awful with real human tragedy taking place in a million places. These posters do not celebrate war. They celebrate the great American spirit of pulling together to save liberty. They reflect and call out to the great spirit of the American people.

PayPal or Credit Card
We use PayPal to process payments. When you click on the add to cart button, you are redirected to the secure PayPal web site. You can use your PayPal account or a credit card.

Special Combined Orders
One reason that a set of four 12x18 prints has a lower per-print price is that shipping is calculated in the pricing. Four prints in one carton ship for less than four separate cartons. Therefore, if you want to place an order that involves a number of prints of different sizes, you should email us for a quote. We will get back to you with reasonable pricing that takes shipping into account.

Return Policy
The last thing we want is a disappointed customer. For that reason we do our best to describe the product accurately so you know what you are getting. Still, if you are disappointed in your poster, we want to give you your money back. Please retain the shipping carton so you can send the poster(s) back to us for a refund. You don't need to apply for a return authorization; just return it within 30 days. We ask that you return the poster(s) in good condition and cover the cost of return shipping. And we would really appreciate knowing about why the poster did not live up to your expectations. For any questions, please email: phil@oceancolor.com
